Three positive things, day fifteen

So today was a relatively normal Wednesday with a few interesting highlights.

The first positive thing was rather unique. My awesomewife took our kids to a local (lake-based) beach to play for a few hours right after breakfast; she had thought of going to just a park but figured the beach would be something a little more special for their day. There was only one other group there - an older lady with two young children, a girl who was about five and a boy about six. At one point, while my wife was playing with our kids on the beach, she noticed that the (presumed) grandmother was in the water with the two kids. The lady was playing with the kids a little bit and then turned to go back to the beach, leaving the two in the water. As she was walking away the little girl began drifting further out into the water and started flailing her arms, indicating she was loosing control of her standing in the water. My wife noticed the lady continue to walk away and not notice, so she got up from the ground and started running to help, shouting as loud as she could to get the lady's attention. Within a few paces the lady realized something was wrong and turned back to grab the girl, who had already submerged a few times. By the time my wife got over to them the girl had been fished out of the water and the grandmother was getting her to cough up the water she'd inhaled - she was shaken, but ok. The grandmother was extremely grateful for my wife's help - if she hadn't started yelling it could have ended a lot worse - and it was a clear reminder that learning to swim is vitally important at a young age.

The second thing was going to our local Drupal user group's monthly meeting and having a fun evening with the few people who attended. As part of it we discussed my idea for a beginner's class for anyone in the area who'd like to learn web development, and we're going to put some work into the starting it in September. Woot!

The last positive thing was my awesomewife uncovering some letters that I'd written sixteen years ago during our first year in the states. I'd lost these so it was great to have a reminder of our early life together.

(this should have been posted last night)

Another short one today.

The first positive thing was hearing from an old friend. We didn't get to chat for long, because I had to have dinner and leave for a class, but we'll chat more again soon.

The second positive thing was attending my first ukulele class with the extremely talented, and patient, Stuart Fuchs. He had a six week freebie class at the local library during June and the start of July, this was the first full class and it went rather well. Stuart is a great teacher and I look forward to future classes.

The final positive thing was updating a client's website to the latest PHP. It was a bit of a juggle to get it all working, and it felt at one point like I had thrown the oranges into the air but nothing was coming down again, but it all worked in the end. And the odd part was that it didn't work when I tried it the previous night. I dunno, but it's working now.

So today was the first day back to work after NYC Camp.

The first positive thing was sleep =) I got up a little early this morning to get everything ready for my day back to work, but was so exhausted after the weekend I went back to bed. What was rather wonderful was that my #awesomewife let me sleep in a bit, so I got an extra hour+ of sleep. And then at lunchtime I snook in another fifteen minute nap. After all that I was starting to feel normal again!

The second positive thing was going swimming with the whole family after dinner. The local YMCA, that we're members of, had been redesigning their family changing rooms, and this was the first chance for us all to see how they work, and, you know, go swimming :-)

The third positive thing happened when we were at the pool. One of the things we were having fun with was throwing a bunch of small colorful balls around to each other. I was carrying Kian while bobbing around in the water, splashing around and tossing the balls to the others. Along the way he started asking for specific balls, because clearly the purple one was better than the blue one. Obviously. Anyway, I was encouraging him to say "ball please" instead of just pointing and grunting, which he did after a little bit. Not being content with that, and because he appeared to spy a favorite, he told me "ringe ball" when he had grabbed an orange one. That's the first time he identified something by color! Quite awesome!

After being in NYC for two days, it was time to go home.

The first positive thing was our luck with NYC traffic holding up and our drive home only taking 3 1/2 hours - no stops this time. We had some breakfast and were on the road by just after 8am, and made it home by a quarter to twelve. And I got to chat with my friend Matt for the whole drive. So lots of awesome there.

The second positive thing was Kian started doing the "Bob" part from Sandra Boynton's book "Fifteen Animals" to hilarious effect :-D I'll have to put together a video of it.

The third positive thing was being home with my family again after being away since early Friday morning.

This was my second day in NYC.

The first positive thing was seeing some of my coworkers and people I've gotten to know in the Drupal community over the past few years. Not being able to see your coworkers in person can definitely be a disadvantage of working from home, so it's good to take these opportunities to meet up with them.

The second positive thing for the day was finally getting a chance to work on a bug in one of the Drupal modules I maintain. It had been sitting there for a while, so I was glad to finally get some time to dig in. It also helped that one of the people to bounce ideas off was there too, so we made some progress.

The third positive thing was explaining to a cop, for whom I'd just bought oatmeal at a small store in downtown, why I was wearing bunny ears. And a dozen other people who also asked. :)
