three positive things

Three positive things, day twenty five

So today was Saturday - my #awesomewife took our kids to some museums in Western Massachusetts while I worked on some things.

The first positive thing was getting huge smiles from Kian when he woke up. Some mornings he's fussy when he wakens up, but this morning he was all smiles.

The second positive thing was finally remember / getting the time to submit sessions to two upcoming web development conferences - NERDSummit in September and NEDCamp in October. I plan on doing the same presentation at both camps, all about open source and based upon my keynote speech from last year's NERDSummit. Should be fun!

The third positive thing was dipping my toes into Drupal 7's defacto e-commerce system "Drupal Commerce" a little more and releasing a small module to solve a specific use case. The goal was to provide a complete product list on the checkout form, so that visitors could fill in what they want and checkout at the same time, rather than having to do it in multiple steps. I'll probably have to do a little more work on it, but it's a reasonably solid start.

Three positive things, day twenty four

(this is from Friday)

That was a fun day.

The first positive thing was that it was my extra day off as part of the 9/80 schedule we're doing at work, so that meant an extra family day. We spent the day at the Montshire museum, which is always fun. Then on the way home we found an ice cream stand which had a playground beside it - we didn't stay to let the kids play because they were exhausted and already falling asleep, and it was really hot out so we figured we'd save it for another day.

The second positive thing was receiving an unexpected email from someone about my work in the Drupal community. Not much to say about it, but it was cool to receive it.

The third positive thing was our eldest attending an event at the local library for teenage kids. It was organized by the library staff and they do various games 'n things with the kids in the library after it has been closed up for the night. They were going to be going from 6pm until midnight, but had a option for the kids to leave at 9 for anyone who needed to. They also had planned to have some authors speak with the group via Skype, but it seemed that was scheduled for the second half of the night, after we'd picked him up. The most exciting aspect of this was that a few days ago, while they were finishing up from a class at the library he asked if he'd be able to go to the event because a girl from the class was wondering if he'd be going - our baby's all gown up! He ended up having a great time.

Three positive things, day twenty three

(this is for Thursday)
This was a somewhat humdrum day.

The first positive thing was working with someone on a bug in a thing in Drupal. My coworker identified the scenario that triggered the bug, and I set about fixing it. While digging into the problem I realized that the thing never would have worked properly the way it had been written, it was always going to have this blatant mistake. It took a little bit but I rewrote part of the logic to avoid triggering the problem, and then wondered why nobody else had fixed this in the probably ten years that this piece of the Drupal puzzle had been around. There's a little bit more to do to tidy up the code and confirm it works correctly for all scenarios, but it's over 90% there.

The other positive things were pretty small - leftovers from some amazing previous meals for lunch & dinner, and some time discussing our vacation plans for later this summer. Like I said, it was a little humdrum.

Three positive things, day twenty two

Today was a relatively average Wednesday.

The first positive thing was someone I work with on that project I mentioned yesterday sending me a surprise gift as a thank you for yesterday's late night efforts. There was a bit more tidying and optimizing to do this morning, but it appears to have worked well for an important demo they were doing today. Thanks Jason!

The second positive thing was my #awesomewife making her amazing lettuce wraps for lunch. They're one of the few things that our family could eat almost every meal for a week and not really grow tired of. I think I've mentioned them before, and this probably won't be the last time either ;-)

The third positive thing was #awesomewife getting a bunch of preparation work done for next year's homeschooling. She has more to go, but a few hours today got through a large chunk of it. Getting through this work now also means that she'll have a more relaxed time for the next few weeks before the next year starts, because it won't be hanging over her head.

Three positive things, day twenty-one

(posting a day late)
So, Tuesday.

The first positive thing was an accident that could have been nasty. While he was helping to put away the dishes from the dishwasher, our eldest stacked up several glass storage containers inside of each other. While he was lifting a stack of them up into the cupboard, they slipped out of his hands and landed on top of another large one that was on the counter, smashing it and throwing chunks of glass all over the kitchen. We shooed the kids out of the kitchen, locked the cats in various rooms, and spent ages cleaning it all up. I had to stop the cleanup efforts after a while because of a call for work, so my #awesomewife had to continue working on it. So, in the end we've lost almost of our glass storage dishes. The good part of all that? There wasn't a scratch on our eldest, even though he was right in front of the glass explosion, and nobody else was injured. Phew!

The second positive thing was realizing just how much of an awesome job our kids have been doing to keep the house clean. They've taken on (given) a number of chores each week, and as a result the house has been looking better than ever.

The third positive thing was resolving a rather problematic bug in a project at work - it took almost all day, but a bug that has been bothering us on-and-off for about two weeks is finally fixed. Phew, again!
